Introduction
The environment in which a student works is more important than it may seem at first. There’s a reason why a person sitting in a crappy chair, who is somewhat uncomfortable, can get more work done compared to someone who is laying in bed, with a laptop on their lap. In this blog post, we’ll go over why a suitable environment will make you more productive, and what you can do in accordance.
Why does a Suitable Environment Make me More Productive?
There are two students.
Each of them have a test the next day.
One of them is studying on their desk, with semi-dim lighting, a comfortable (but not too much), light music playing in the background, and their phone in a completely separate space. The other is studying on his bed, with extremely loud music playing right beside him, his phone right next to him as the notifications sound, and as he is about to fall asleep because he is too comfortable.
Ultimately, which student is going to get more done studying? Will it be the uncomfortable or the comfortable one?
You can do all the research you want, but you will end up with the same answer no matter where your (reliable) source is from. If your environment is garbage, then so will your studying be. And even if it isn’t studying, then consider general working and productivity. If you are in an environment that doesn’t suit you and just distracts you to an awful extent, then forget the idea of ever getting good work done.
What YOU can do:
Step 1: A Quiet and Organized Space
A clutter-free and organized study area can have a significant impact on a student’s focus and productivity. Seriously, once you’ve made the change from a horribly organized and messy space to the opposite, everything changes (with how your environment suits you).
Additionally, you can also opt for a quiet environment as well to minimize distractions and allow yourself to concentrate on your studies (or work) without unnecessary disruptions. Personally, I can’t get anything done if I’m sitting in silence, with no music playing in the background, so if you don’t have the answer to this question already, I suggest finding out now.
Step 2: Comfortable Seating and Proper Lighting
Get yourself a chair that is comfortable, but not too comfortable. If you end up falling asleep on the chair that you’re currently working on, then you are either (a): too tired, and need more sleep, or (b): have a chair that is awfully too comfortable. Any standard computer chair should do just the job, nothing fancy is necessary.
Additionally, you can add the proper lighting too. Studies show (somewhere) that too bright of lights actually worsens your productivity. So, do what you will with that information. And as a personal suggestion, try getting your hands on some calm color, blue lights to enhance your concentration. If you can’t follow any of these steps, then don’t worry.
Step 3: Access to Essential Resources:
Once you start, there’s no backing out. You will not get up, leave, or do anything besides work for the next couple of hours (or however long you can last). Have all your essentials by your side so that moving is irrelevant and unnecessary.
Additionally, you can also prepare your computer with the necessary study/work tabs on your browser so that you are ready-to-go at any time of the day.
Step 4: Extra Tips
The following are some extra tips that you can use if you’d like, but are not necessary.
- Proper ventilation and a comfortable room temperature to contribute towards a healthy and productive learning environment. Fresh air and a pleasant temperature help students stay alert and focused.
- Surrounding oneself with a supportive network of family, friends, mentors, and educators to get feedback, guidance, and encouragement to continue.
- A set schedule or guideline for how long you plan to work, and what you aim to get done.
- Make all of the above habits. Do it continuously, again and again, until you nail it every single time; until you no longer have to ask yourself: “how should I prepare?”
Conclusion:
Creating the perfect environment for student success involves a thoughtful combination of physical, emotional, and intellectual elements. By providing yourself with the right resources, support, and mindset, you can empower yourself to achieve your academic goals and reach your full potential. At the end of the day, this should be the easy part of your work routine. Nothing has to be complicated here.
